Sant Llorenç de Balàfia

This is the last of the villages which form part of the municipality. It is the only village that lacks a coastal zone, since it is situated in the central zone of the island. The population of some 1232 is disseminated leaving the village practically uninhabited. It is made up of one church only, and some public and commercial buildings.

In the village of Sant Llorenc you will find a little hamlet consisting of houses, typical in the Pitiusan characteristic architecture with towers of Arabic origin, considered as national monuments of great value. These towers were built by families of country folk, who dwelt in the accommodation which surrounded them, as defence towers where they could hide and defend themselves from the numerous Turkish attacks on the island. Nowadays they are inhabited by families who have owned them since ancient times.

The patron saint’s day of Sant Llorenc de Balafia is celebrated on August 10th and the older people say that this is the hottest day of the year.

It gives me pleasure to point out the beauty of the churches in all the villages of the municipality, all of them hundreds of years old, of thick white walls and with paved patios on the outside, as well as their little graveyards at the side of them. They are places which you must see, because they are churches with characteristics of our architecture which don’t appear in the rest of the churches which you can find in the Spanish geography. Of particular interest is the church of Sant Miquel de Balanzat which is apparently the oldest in Ibiza, according to expert study.
