Sant Miquel de Balanzat

The village of Sant Miquel is the biggest of the municipality. It is made up of a nucleus of some 314 inhabitants and some 910 disseminated inhabitants.

The village of Sant Miquel has a very important tourist zone called “Port of Sant Miquel” which is a place with a large influx of tourists, with it’s hotels on the slope of the mountain facing the sea. The tourist population of this area is some 1500.

As a place of interest in Sant Miquel, one which stands out is the “Cova de Can Marca” which is hidden on a bend in the Port of Sant Miquel. It is a cave which, in olden times, was used to bring in contraband and as a hiding place for those who used to smuggle. Nowadays you can still see signs left by those who brought the contraband pointing out where the goods were to be left and they also indicate various exits and entrances. It is a humid cave with interior lakes and numerous stalactites and stalagmites which have been formed over time by the humidity and the limestone rock.

Sant Miquel Arcangel is the patron saint and the saint’s day is celebrated on September 29th and it’s celebrations are similar to those in Sant Joan, with the exception of the “fires of Sant Joan”.
