The
municipality of Saint Juan Bautista actually named Saint Joan de
Labritja is found in the north of the island of Ibiza and is 22 km. from
the capital (Ibiza).
The
recent change of name of the municipality and its coat-of-arms was due
to studies carried out in place names as well as heraldry, by the
Institut d’ Estudis Eivissencs, which led them to the name of Saint
Joan de Labritja.
The
municipality of Saint Joan de Labritja is one that has less inhabitants
than Ibiza, about 4,194 and it measures 119.7 km2.
All
the coast of Sant Joan is formed by the cliffs between which often are
hidden small coves of clear water.
This
part of the island includes huge areas of rural character, in which are
conserved Balearic houses of traditional architecture and there is
plenty of cultivated land and numerous olive trees, some of which are
more than a hundred years old. To the north west of Sant Joan you can
take excursions to get to know its mountain streams and some uncommon
species which form part of its vegetation. The ecological value of this
municipality keeps on increasing thanks to the marine birds and the
endemic plants which grow in the coastal regions.
The
municipality is made up of four parishes: Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Miguel de
Balansat, Sant Vicent de Sa Cala and Sant Llorenc de Balafia,
which form a collection of small associations of an urban character,
portrayed by their churches. |
